March 3-6, 2011 Starting from the 10 Mile Snow Park we strapped on our snowshoes or skis and headed up the trail 3.3 miles to the Paulina Lake Resort. Along the way we stopped at Paulina Trail Falls to take some pictures. Water was still flowing but there was a great deal of colorful ice and snow surrounding the water fall. After settling into our cabin some ventured out on a late night snowshoe hike thought the woods to the water fall. Friday morning started out with a hearty breakfast then a 7.2 mile hike around the lake. There were a few challenging moments but we managed to overcome all obstacles in our way with no injuries and then laugh about it. We ventured out onto the frozen lake for a while until it became to thin. We were about 1/3 of the way around the lake then Bill showed us where there was a hot spring at the edge of the lake. No one took off their warm clothes to enjoy the natural warm spring I believe it was because no one brought a towel, ya that's why. Saturday we headed up to the top of Paulina Peak, a 7.1 mile hike with an elevation gain of 1,652 feet. It was disappointing the visibility was not that good but it was amazing to be on top. It was snowing, cold with a light wind making people want to hunker down to eat some lunch. After a short time someone suggested we head down and all came into a quick agreement. Taking off down the north side was amazing, hiking though the woods in deep snow. Those in the lead were able to make their own trail down visually finding the best bushwhacking route. I was blessed to have been invited on this type of winter back country hiking, it was the first for me. I need to work on my off trail hiking technique and I'm not sure tube style framed snowshoes are the best, they made me slide on the snow coming down hill. I made some new friends this weekend and look forward to seeing them on the trail again soon, thanks for the invite.
